SEMINAR FOR PRIVATE EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

BUILDING & OPERATING A FINANCIALLY VIABLE AND ROBUST PRIVATE EDUCATION INSTITUTION LANDSCAPE IN SINGAPORE

The Singapore education brand is well regarded globally. This reputation has its foundation based on the high standards set and maintained by both tertiary education and continuing education and training (CET) for adults. The Singapore education reputation is a long tenured investment in building a quality private education sector which Singaporeans and foreigners alike can benefit from and trust. As a global education hub, it is critical that we compete on quality rather than quantity.

Full-time private education students grew 4-fold from 9,000 in 1997 to 37,000 in 2007. The Singapore government hopes to continue to engage and work with credible private players to establish high quality CET organisations for Singapore and our neighbours.

To establish and maintain a trust system between the education ministry, the private education institutions (PEIs) and the students, there is a need to ensure that PEIs are of acceptable quality, standing and reputation.

Recently, the government developed the EduTrust Quality Certification Scheme to fulfil and satisfy certain academic, financial and student welfare requirements. EduTrust certified private schools will need to demonstrate adequate financial capacity to protect students. EduTrust certification is mandatory for PEIs who wish to enrol foreign students. The government is currently stepping up on enforcement and PEIs will need to be more mindful of their statutory obligations and take positive steps to improve themselves.

This seminar will help PEIs identify their financial weaknesses and improve on their credit standing to maintain their ability to offer programmes that cater to the current and future demands of the business landscape.
